Kian Lechner is the trustee representing the students of West Valley College. He was elected in 2018, and re-elected in 2019 for a second term. During his time as trustee, Kian has pushed for, among others, student housing, educational transparency, campus safety, and an increased student role in the decision making processes of government at all levels. Leading up to the November 2018 election, Kian helped lead the Measure W campaign to victory, which will further improve both West Valley and Mission colleges by generating over $700 million for the district. He has met with community leaders and elected officials ranging from police chiefs and college administrators, to members of Congress, and major media outlets, to discuss student issues, and share the student perspective. In May of 2019, Kian visited the California Capitol Building to meet with elected members of the legislature—advocating for student housing and wellness.
He currently serves as a policy advisor for Santa Clara County Supervisor Dave Cortese, assisting him on issues including education policy, equity, public safety, the environment, and student outreach. There he has worked on policies which directly impact the students of the Bay Area.
Prior to his time in politics, Kian worked and volunteered as an emergency medical technician, as well as the assistant director of a special needs band.
In his free time, Kian can be found spending time with his friends and family, playing with his dog, or strumming his guitar. He also continues to volunteer as a first responder with many local organizations including the American Red Cross and San Jose Fire Department.
He looks forward to a year filled with substantive victories for the students of West Valley College, and the Bay Area as a whole!
